About Our Team

Our Medical Director

William Vederman, MD is Founder and Medical Director of Sunrise Health Medical Group, Inc. He is currently Board Certified by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. He grew up in Washington, DC and received a B.A. in physics from Cornell University. After working for several years as an aerospace engineer on early anti-missile missiles at Douglas Aircraft in Los Angeles, he attended S.U.N.Y., Downstate Medical College, in New York City, and graduated in 1969.

He was a Board Certified Family Practitioner in San Jose for seven years. There he delivered the occasional baby, performed office surgery, assisted in hospital surgery, treated patients of all ages, and generally had a fine time. His experiences with overweight patients in his practice led to a lively interest in the issue of obesity and its treatment.

In 1977, he was offered a position as Chief of the Emergency Department at Highland General Hospital, Alameda’s County Hospital, with teaching responsibilities for the Interns and Residents that was too interesting to pass up. Subsequently, he served as Medical Director for Western Emergency Physicians, and then as Medical Director of the Emergency Department at Mercy Folsom Hospital in Folsom, CA until 1991.

Dr. Vederman’s initial interest in the nature and treatment of weight problems remained strong, so in 1981 he founded Sunrise Health Systems Medical Group, Inc. After trying in vain to fit that name onto the front of several early offices, he changed the name to the shorter (but still formidable) Sunrise Health Medical Group.

Dr. Vederman has a son who is the Executive Editor of PC Gamer, a national computer games publication. He belongs to two Pediatric Obesity Interest Groups (POIGs), one based at UCSF Medical School in San Francisco and one at Children’s Hospital in Oakland, and he is an active member of Oakland Rotary where he has served on the Education Support Committee and the Community Service Committee. He is currently working with several Oakland public schools to help curb the epidemic of obesity in children. He was formerly a docent in the California History Department of the Oakland Museum. He can ski a little.

Our General Manager

Randa Peterson is our General Manager. She was raised in Prince George, B.C., and was a British Columbia figure skating champion. She skated professionally with Holiday on Ice for many years, and as a result, she is familiar with a vast number of large and small cities and their skating facilities in Europe, the U.S., and Latin America. Prior to joining Sunrise Health Medical Group, she worked as the manager of a fitness club in Minnesota, and more recently as a licensed real estate sales person. She is particularly good at finding ways to overcome obstacles patients may encounter in the course of their programs. In addition to her management responsibilities, because of her people skills, she frequently works with our youngest patients.

Randa has a 25-year-old son, Justin, who is a skilled actor and a budding director.

Our Physicians

Dr. Jagraj S. Basi, MD is a recent addition to our group.  He received a B.S. degree in engineering from Pennsylvania State University and received training in Internal Medicine in his home state of New Jersey at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.  Dr. Basi is experienced in Internal Medicine, Occupational Medicine, and Bariatrics and has lived in California for the past four years.  Dr. Basi’s interest in the medical aspects of obesity and insight into the problems of overweight patients began with his own loss of sixty pounds.

Dr. Basi is single.  He enjoys hiking, reading, and traveling.

Dr. Albert Mazzie, MD has practiced in several of our East Bay Clinics since 1998. He is a Board Certified specialist in Internal Medicine. He worked as an Internist in his own private practice for a number of years. He was a Medical Officer for Pan American Airways at SFO, and also practiced Occupational Medicine at the Palo Alto Clinic in Palo Alto before joining Sunrise Health Medical Group.

He is married to Margaret, an R.N., and they have a grown son living in Los Angeles. Dr. Mazzie says he continues to practice in order to support his hobby of collecting antique rugs. Few doctors know as much about weight control and antique rugs as Dr. Mazzie.
