About Sunrise Health Medical Group, Inc.

 Español>

Sunrise Health Medical Group, Inc. is among the largest and oldest medical practices in Northern California specializing in Preventive Medicine and particularly in Bariatrics, the medical science and specialty of weight control.

We were working to combat the epidemic of obesity long before it became a high-profile issue. In our offices, you'll be in a warm, caring environment where you' re not viewed as a nuisance or a delinquent but instead as a decent person with a treatable medical problem.

We' re interested in you; we 're interested in your weight problem; and we believe we can help you.

     We've treated nearly 100,000 patients

since our founding over 25 years ago, and several of our nurses have lost over 100 pounds themselves.

In fact, over the years, more than a dozen of our nurses have achieved major weight losses using one or another of our programs and the principles they learned in our offices.  We're proud of them and are particularly happy to have them on our staff as we think their experiences uniquely equip them to understand and help you or your family or friends with their weight problems.

We are working vigorously to give something back to our community. We are active members of the UCSF Obesity Interest Group, the Strategic Alliance for Healthy Food and Activity Environments, and the Ethnic Health Institute at Summit Hospital in Oakland. All of these groups work to combat the childhood epidemic of obesity now causing diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol in an age group where they never previously occurred..

Our Medical Director speaks frequently at Oakland public schools and other community groups to children and their parents about ways to avoid becoming a statistic in the obesity epidemic.

Our approach

We prescribe when indicated a variety of FDA-approved appetite suppressants including, for example, phentermine, Tenuate, and Bontril, and as a result of our working relationship with obesity specialists at UCSF, we may prescribe other cutting-edge medications not generally available elsewhere.

We are one of the few Bay Area providers of the noted HMR® Meal Replacement Plans. These plans have been used for many years at the University of Kentucky Obesity Clinic where they have been extensively studied. Two recent studies indicated that people lose more weight with this program than any comparable diet.  In published medical studies, the average weight loss of people using this program under a doctor's supervision is 68 pounds.

These plans use a variety of pre-packaged meals and weight-loss shakes to make proper eating as easy and as convenient as imaginable.  All that you add is your own fruit and vegetables.  There are no other food choices you have to make.  Because of the "more is better" feature of these plans, hunger is virtually eliminated while you lose weight.

At all times, we recommend and teach better food choices and reasonable levels of physical activity. We are developing special groups at our local YMCAs where patients who would like to increase their activity in a group setting will be comfortable and happy.

We are not wedded to any single theory or therapy. You will not get cookie cutter treatment in our offices. If there is a safe, scientific approach that might be the solution soley for you, we will provide it for you. Our interest is in seeing you lose weight safely and reliably, and we are happy with any method that accomplishes that.

In summary, we have the most experience with the widest range of non-surgical weight control therapies to be had anywhere in Northern California. Many, many thousands of people just like yourself have had excellent results in our offices, and while everyone is unique, there is every reason to expect that you will also be successful.
