In The News: Sunrise Health Medical Group Endorses Membership in the YMCA

All the scientific evidence indicates that you will lose weight most easily and keep it off most successfully if you increase your levels of physical activity. We understand that there are physical and psychological barriers to, as the ad goes, “just doing it.” We know that you might not be comfortable being seen in a bathing suit or in revealing work-out clothes, and we know how intimidating it can be to walk into a room full of fitness buffs.

Most commercial fitness clubs are aimed at a much higher level of physical training than is reasonable or necessary for people whose immediate aim is to lose weight.

Alliance With the YMCA

For that reason, after a careful look at all the alternatives, we have formed an alliance with the YMCA. The Y is family oriented. Its emphasis is on family health and wellness. There are people of all sizes, shapes, ages, and races at the Y, and most importantly, overweight people are made comfortable there.

We are working with the Y’s staff to establish programs that specifically fit the needs of our patients. Most branches of the Y have heated pools where our groups can do water walking and indoor walking tracks to get you accustomed again to the pleasures of simply walking. Fun and simple movement classes tailored to our patients are coming soon. The Y will be recruiting some not-so-buffed people who are already Y members to act as guides and inspiration for Sunrise patients that might like peer guidance and support.

Discount Membership Rates

Memberships for 2003 at the Y are $106 per month for families, $59 for individual adults, and there is no initiation fee or long-term contract to sign nor any pressure to continue a membership if you don’t want to. Children twelve and under can come to the Y for free with a parent’s membership. Solo teen rates are $23 per month and there are scholarships for adults or children who cannot otherwise afford membership.

(For your information, the Y is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization. Sunrise Health Medical Group, Inc. receives no money of any kind from the Y for endorsing it or for encouraging our patients to utilize its facilities. We believe the Y will help you succeed. We succeed when you succeed.)
