What are GLP-1 drugs: Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Tirzepatide

While GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs were originally developed and used to help people with diabetes, they have also been found to be incredibly popular and useful for helping people lose weight. Studies have shown that Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Tirzepatide can help people lose between 15% - 25% of their bodyweight.

How Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Tirzepatide work for weight loss

  1. They slow down gastric emptying. The slowdown in the movement of food through the stomach will make you feel full faster and longer.
  2. Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Tirzepatide also work by activating GLP-1 receptors in the part of the brain called the hypothalamus. By activating these receptors, GLP-1 medications reduce hunger and increase the feeling of fullness.
  3. They improve metabolic function. Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Tirzepatide optimize your metabolic function by regulating blood sugar levels, increasing insulin sensitivity and by stimulating fat cell oxidation, all of which will help you lose weight more effectively.
  4. Semaglutide and Tirzepatide can help shift the body’s “set point”. We all have a “set point” or a default weight. This is usually determined by our genetics. If a person loses weight, the brain will try to increase it again back to the “set point” by making you feel hungrier and slowing down your metabolism. This will cause you to regain all the weight you lost. Semaglutide, Liraglutide, and Tirzepatideturn this mechanism off. Thus, when the weight is lost, the feelings of hunger are still suppressed, so you won’t regain the weight.
  5. Tirzepatide is also a GIP receptor agonist, which further enhances all of the above effects.

How our weight loss program works

During your first visit we will discuss your weight loss goals and what has and hasn’t worked in the past. Then Dr. Basi will evaluate your medical history and perform a brief physical exam. If everything looks good, then Dr. Basi and his team will create a personalized treatment regimen including a diet and exercise plan and GLP-1 medications Semaglutide or Tirzepatide.

Please note: Not everyone will be eligible for GLP-1 medications due to previous medical history or current health issues. If this is the case, we also offer a prescription appetite suppressant program using popular medications such as Phentermine, Phendimetrazine and Diethylpropion, which can also be considered.

During your initial visit we will prescribe your GLP-1 medication and show you how to inject yourself at home. If you prefer, you can come to the office and have us inject you free of charge. Follow up appointments are scheduled once a month and can be scheduled more frequently depending on your needs. Medications will be dispensed on a monthly basis. Our expert medical staff is  available by phone 24/7 or email.
